We, the privileged class of this society wander by choice, we wader so we can relax, recharge and rejuvenate ourselves. But what if we were forced to wander…. what if wandering was more of a compulsion rather than a choice??? Distress wandering is more of a bane than a boon. For the nomadic communites the bane is life long unless they become part of the efforts that are specially designed to pull them out of surviving under nightmarish conditions. Over the past few years VSSM has pulled hundreds of nomadic families from living life in despair. How does it feel to be pulled out of living under abject poverty?? The narration by Tejalben gave us a before and after picture. Tejalben is a resident of L. P. Savani Nagar, a newly constructed settlement in the town of Deesa, Banaskantha.
As Tejalben narrates, “ We wandered ad lived like vagabonds, begged for food and money you (VSSM) thought us how to live. Our children loitered around, went begging with us but you thought of them and brought them to school, made homes for us. We earned our living by digging through garbage collecting scrap, now we dislike putting our hands in filth. You took us to banks who else would allow us to enter the premises of such institutes…be it rain or shine you have stood by us, cared for us. It was you who made us such beautiful houses or else we would still be living under the open sky at the mercy of the elements and people, always fearing he onslaught of either.. Owning a house means freedom. We now know how it is to live a life that fears none, what it feels to own a house and live in one…the best part is water - earlier finding even drinking water was an issue so bathing and washing clothes was out of question, now we have water to drink, bathe and even was our mattresses!!! We bathe daily, are clean, smell good and live with some style !!!! We are happy and along with God we thank you for all the good fortune you have brought to us!!”

Wow.. such honest revelation, we had never realised that our work makes such impact. These little things we individuals enjoy in our lives, are so much taken for granted that we hardly make a conscious note of it. Before asking for more we should take a moment and thank for all that we have because there are millions of fellow countrymen who even today are denied access to the mere basics that are so crucial to survive…
Had it not been for the unflinching support of respected Shri. Vallbhbhai Savani the Deesa settlement would have never shaped up the way it has today. We are eternally to thankful to Shri. Vallbhbhai Savani Family. We thank our technical partners Shri Ujamsibhia Khandla - Monarch Builders and our design experts Ms. Aparna Kadikar and Shri. Hemang Mistry. The continuous support of Friends of VSSM keeps us going and we are grateful for having them besides us, always.
સામાન સાથે ગામે ગામ રઝડવાની પીડા શું હોય, એ આપણા જેવા સ્થાઈ અને પોતાનું ઘર હોય તેવા પરિવારો ના સમજી શકે. વસવાટની સાથે સાથે જીવનમાં સદાય અસ્થિરતા છે એવા વિચરતા પરિવારો પોતાનું સરનામું મેળવવા કેટલું વેઠે છે એ એમના મોઢે સાંભળીયે ત્યારે સમજાય કે કુદરતે આપણને કેટલું આપ્યું છે આમાં ફરિયાદોને તો કોઈ અવકાશ જ ના રહે..

તેજલબહેન - 'અમે ગામે ગામ રખડતાં - ભટકતા. માગીને ખાતા. તમે(vssm) અમને જીવતાં શીખવાડ્યું. અમારા ઘર કરી આપ્યાં. અમારા છોકરા ગમે ત્યાં રખડતાં હતાં પણ હવે એ પણ ભણતા થયા. એમના માટે તમે વિચાર્યું. પહેલાં છોકરાં માંગી ખાતાં, ભણવાનું તો સમજે જ નહિ.અમે પોતે માંગતા, ભંગાર વીણતાં હવે તો ભંગાર વીણવાનું ગમેય નહિ. ગંધવેડામાં કોણ હાથ નાખે. પહેલાં આવું નહોતું સમજાતું. તમે અમને બેંકમાં જતાં કર્યા નહિ તો અમને વળી બેંકમાં કોણ ઘુસવા દે? તમે તો ટાઢ, તડકામાં ય અમારી પડખે આવીને ઉભા રહ્યા. કેવા સરસ મકાન કરી આપ્યા. પહેલાં તો ગમે ત્યાં છાપરામાં પડી રહેતાં અને ગામના લોકો ગમે ત્યારે ખાલી કરાવે એટલે લબાચા લઈને બીજે જઇયે. હવે પોતાનું ઘર થયું એટલે કોઈ ખાલી નથી કરાવતું. ભગવાનની સાથે સાથે સંસ્થા(vssm)નો અમે આભાર માનીયે છીએ. હવે અમે એટીકેટ રહેવા માંડ્યા નહિ તો નાહવામાં ય અમે ક્યાં હમજતા તા! એક એક અઠવાડિયે નાહતા. હવે પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા થઇ લોકો રોજ નાહતા થયાં. કપડાં તો ધોવે ગોદડાય ધોવા માંડ્યા છે. વ્યવસ્થિત રહેવા માંડ્યા છે. પહેલાં અધમણ મેલના ભરેલા ફરતાં. પીવાનાં પાણીનો આશરો નહોતો આવામાં નાહવા -ધોવાનું પાણી રોજ ક્યાંથી લાવવું? પણ હવે સુખ છે.'
ડીસાના આ પરિવારોને ઘર અપાવવામાં સરકારની સાથે સાથે સુરતના શ્રેષ્ઠી શ્રી વલ્લભભાઇ સવાણી પરિવારનો આભાર માનીયે છીએ એમની મદદ વગર આ કામ થવું સંભવ નહોતું. આ પરિવારોના ઘરોમાં તમામ ઈજનેરી સહયોગ શ્રી ઉજમશીભાઈ ખાંદલા મોનાર્ક બિલ્ડર્સે કર્યો તો મકાનની ડીઝાઇન શ્રી અપર્ણા કડીકર અને હેમાંગ મિસ્ત્રીએ કરી. જયારે ફ્રેન્ડસ ઓફ vssm નો સહયોગ ના મળ્યો હોત તો આ કામો થવા અસંભવ હતાં. સૌનો આ તબક્કે આભાર વ્યક્ત કરું છું.
